Area Programs
The state is divided into 12 Area Programs to facilitate coaches education and competition opportunities. Each of these Area Programs is managed by volunteer Area Coordinators and their Area Sports Management Team whose general direction and support is provided by the Sports Program Managers on staff.
The basic principles of each local delegation are mandated by policies and procedures set forth by Special Olympics Incorporated and Special Olympics Minnesota. Each local delegation has an identity of its own determined by the local volunteers and athletes.
There are currently over 190 delegations participating in Special Olympics Minnesota's program. The four types of local delegations are:
INDEPENDENT – a delegation consisting of 1-2 athletes and 1-2 coaches
SCHOOL – a delegation supported by a school in a particular community by means of finance, facilities and coaches
GROUP HOME/DAC – a delegation that partners with a facility or organization
COMMUNITY-BASED - a delegation consisting of volunteers within a community but independent of any other institution or organization.
